Frome Congress.

Please find below details of the next Frome Congress organised by the Frome Chess Club (with many helpers).  The annual Frome Congress is one of the most popular and friendly Congresses in the South-West, regularly attracting between 150 and 200 entrants.  The Selwood Academy venue has comfortable playing conditions. The restaurant, bookstall and analysis areas are separate from the playing areas and there is ample (free) car parking.  The Congress includes the Somerset Championships. The Open is FIDE-rated.

The organisers reserve the right to require additional mitigations against COVID-19, such as the compulsory wearing of face masks in the tournament hall.  The final decision will be made shortly before the start of the congress, based on the government regulations in force at the time.  Online entries and Congress leaflet/brochure will be made available as soon as possible.  Please bear with them while they make the final arrangements.

You may register your interest by emailing info@somersetchess.org. We will contact you when all the details are finalised.

West of England & South Wales County Team Championships (u9,u12 & u14)

IMG_20200111_161152302

This weekend we had the West of England & South Wales County Team Championships (u9,u12 & u14) of which Josh and Nathanael had been invited to be a part of the Somerset County Team.

They both had successful matches, with Josh having 3 wins and 1 draw and his u9’s team winning overall.  The u14’s didn’t have such a good time after Gloucester decided to submit a team and subsequently took Somerset’s top four u14 players with them.  This was a big hit for them.  The u14’s team unfortunately came last even though some long hard fought games were made on higher boards than they would usually play.  Nathanael however had a successful day coming out with 2 wins and 1 loss.

Well done boys!

This time we had 4 juniors taking part, Nathanael, Harvey, Joshua & also Ryan (one of our future juniors).

Nathanael has now moved up from the u12’s to u16’s which is quite a jump when you are 12.  Today there were only 6 of them in his age group so they all got to play each other.  He had many challenging and long games.  He finally came out with 1.5 points.

This was Harvey’s first tournament and as he’s only been playing for 3 months he was very brave to give the tournament a try.  Even though he didn’t come out with a win this time he definitely gave each of his opponents a run for their money by keeping them playing for quite a while, a great achievement for a beginner.  We look forward to seeing how he progresses as he learns more at the club.  Welcome onboard Harvey!

Joshua, our little rising star, at age 5 was also attending his first tournament.  He was placed in the u7/u8 group and seemed to end up playing the u8’s most of the time.  This didn’t matter as he was able to clock up 4 wins out of 6!!!  It was all down to the last game  and fortunately his main contender lost his last game which placed Josh as joint winner of the u7’s group.  What a great achievement at such a young age.  I think Arnold (Dad) is going to have to do some DIY and put up a shelf in his room as I feel we are going to see many more trophies coming his way!

Ryan another new promising junior is not really known to anybody in the club yet.  He is currently waiting for our junior side to start up at the club so he decided to join us at the tournament and it was good to meet him and for us to get to know his family,  Ryan, taught solely by a computer so far, put up some good games for his first tournament in the u8’s.  He came out with 4 wins (one loss against Joshua!) and was awarded the runner up trophy.
20191013_171453So all in all it was quite a successful day and it was lovely to have a team going from Taunton Chess Club.

The next tournament is at Bristol Grammar School on the 10th November 2019.  Make sure you are signed up to the Somerset Junior Chess Grand Prix newsletter to receive your entry form link.
